Cristo Jurado-Verdu and ESR2 Vicente Matus in their lab at IDeTIC- ULPGC, Canary Islands, for the Macaronight 2020

We were tremendously gratified for showing what we do at IDeTIC-ULPGC to children from 7 to 15 years old by holding two online workshops with eight schools at the Macaronight, the Macaronesia’s version of the European Researchers Night. Later that day, Cristo and I gave a plenary talk and received positive feedback from our online audience. We taught children to use the Morse code with lights during our workshops, a didactical technique to introduce our Optical Communication research. The groups of teenagers could remotely connect to a Visible Light Communication demonstrator we called “Photobot,” in which they could control the motors of a robotic arm that receives instructions from light. We are in a global sanitary emergency, and it is not possible to make massive events, but that would not stop us, and we took advantage of the wide availability of telecommunication tools. The children were amazed when they could complete the tasks, and their vivid celebrations were such an uplifting feeling for us. We would be more than happy to repeat these workshops soon.
